Utility billing: Helpful tools for tenants and landlords

90 percent of utility bills are said to be incorrect. This can be particularly expensive this year and there is a risk of high additional payments. Digital providers promise tenants and landlords relief.

Things get tricky once a year: when the utility bill comes from the landlord. Water, caretaker and property tax – owners can pass these and many other costs on to their tenants.

But mistakes often happen. 90 percent of utility bills are inadequate, as data from the start-up Mineko shows. Last year the error rate was 81 percent. Mineko checks utility bills for tenants for errors. The survey was based on around 20,000 utility bills. On average, tenants are currently being charged 317 euros too much, according to Mineko. In 2022 it was 192 euros.
