NEW DELHI: The parents of a Class II student in Uttarakhand have filed a complaint with the Dehradun District Magistrate that their son called them ‘ami aur abu’ after reading the Urdu word for mother and father in a school textbook. After the authorities have ordered an investigation, The Wire has reported this with reference to the Hindustan Times. According to the Hindustan Times, the student’s father, Manish Mittal, called the use of these words in the book an ‘attack on religious faith’. In his complaint, Mittal said, the use of mother and father in English books is inappropriate and mischievous.
The new academic year has just started and immediate action can prevent such ‘anti-religious acts’.
Banshidhar Tiwari, director of Uttarakhand school education, said, “We have ordered an inquiry.” All stakeholders will be heard. The textbook will also be examined, further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry report
Mittal said he was shocked when he heard his son calling him Abu and Ammi. He said, ‘When we asked him the reason, he showed us his English textbook Gul Meher 2 from Orient Black Swan, Hyderabad. In the first chapter, Ammi and Abu have been used for parents.
A local Hindu group has also lodged a complaint with Dehradun Chief Education Officer Pradeep Kumar demanding the book be removed from the syllabus.Kumar said the parents approached the magistrate who forwarded the complaint to him. He said, ‘I have sought feedback from ICSE-affiliated school principals and academics. I will also write to ICSE if required. We have also received a complaint from Hindu Vahni against the book. They have demanded to remove this book from the curriculum.
