V. Blinkevičiūtė was not convinced by G. Landsbergis’ invitation to negotiate: we will do without his advice

The MEPs were generally not convinced by the idea expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs that the strengthening of non-democratic forces is beginning to pose a danger to Lithuania’s western course. According to V. Blinkevičiūtė, it is not the activity of extreme parties that G. Landsbergis is talking about, but the policy of conservatives that has worried the country’s residents.

“I see a threat from the Conservative Party and Landsberg as chairman. Don’t you think that this was shown by the great disappointment of the people of Lithuania with them, with their politics? This is the point,” said V. Blinkevičiūtė to Elta.

Therefore, the politician does not consider the foreign minister’s calls for a dialogue between the left and right forces of Lithuania to be a serious proposal.

“Gabriel Landsbergis is on vacation and I wish him continued success during this busy pre-election period. To be honest, I heard what he was trying to say. But we will probably do without the advice of Gabrielius Landsbergis. I think that he has enough of his own problems, which I wish him to solve,” said the chairwoman of the Social Democrats.

For her part, the politician avoids commenting on the hints expressed by herself about a possible coalition of social democrats with Remigijaus Žemaitaitis’s “Nemunas Aušra”.

On the one hand, said V. Blinkevičiūtė, it is still early to talk about coalitions, a few months before the elections. On the other hand, the politician continued, her words about cooperation with R. Žemaitaiš remained a little distorted in the public space.

“I said that after the elections I will assess the situation, values, programmatic attitudes of each political force, opportunities to work and not work. I have no idea why we have to run, rush, write it off, black it out. Each party has its own attitudes and visions. Let’s respect every party”, said the politician, not wanting to give a more specific opinion either about “Nemunas Aušra” or about other parties criticized by the right.

“Why do I have to judge anyone? For me, the most important thing is that our social democrats prepare well for the elections so that they have confidence. I don’t want to judge everyone else. I don’t see the need to do that,” repeated V. Blinkevičiūtė principledly, however, admitting that she can already present a very clear opinion in relation to one political force.

“We have a very clear position about the conservatives, and we don’t have any position about everyone else,” she said, assuring that despite all the calls, the social democrats will in no way sign a partnership with the conservatives.

“I have repeatedly said that this is our red line,” concluded V. Blinkevičiūtė.

Conservative leader G. Landsbergis Eltai said this week that he sees the dangerous strengthening of undemocratic forces in Lithuania. As a result, according to the politician, parties on the left and right of the center could negotiate and thus prevent radical forces from coming to power after the autumn elections.

“If, after all, a centre-left coalition were to be formed, I would be surprised that Mrs. Blinkevičiūtė could prevent those radical forces from coming to the Seimas. Therefore, it seems to me that it is wise to have consensus, as was the case in the European Parliament, between the main central forces, and to make maximum efforts so that the radicals do not take a position in the state,” the foreign minister told Elta by phone.

For her part, last week the leader of the Social Democrats, V. Blinkevičiūtė, hinted that her party could form a ruling coalition with many of the currently operating political forces. As the member of the European Parliament stated to “Žinių Radio”, the political force “Nemunas Dawn” led by Remigius Žemaitaitis is no exception.

“It is possible to find common points of contact with more than one opposition party. (…) We need to see how they will succeed in talking and coordinating the program provisions”, V. Blinkevičiūtė said to “Žinių radio”, asking if the Social Democrats would see opportunities to invite a newly established political force to the ruling coalition in the event of a victory in the Seimas elections.
