The eventual return to the new reality after facing the most serious pandemic of the last century has caused new challenges. Now one of the biggest questions is about the marketing of the vaccine against Covid-19 in Mexico. Although it is already on sale in other countries, here it is exclusively used by the health sector for emergency use.

With this in mind, all doses that are applied are property of the federal government and in no way can profit be made from the biological because it is a serious crime. Although now a strong debate has been generated due to the only options available.

What type of vaccine against Covid-19 is there in Mexico?

At the beginning of the massive vaccination campaign, 10 different options were authorized. Although at this moment there are only two that are used as reinforcement in risk groups and they are the Russian Sputnik V and the Cuban Rather. This situation has generated controversy because neither of them is updated to protect against new variants of the virus.

Due to the above, for a few months now the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) began a process to allow the obtaining of health records and allow the marketing of vaccines against Covid-19 in Mexico.

Publication of the final result

After a long process, it is expected that on November 29, the final resolution will be published to the companies that requested the transition from emergency use authorization to health registration of vaccines against Covid-19which will allow its commercialization in the national market.

As part of the process and prior to the final resolution, on November 22, a regulatory mechanism called prevention was issued to the requesting companies, as an additional requirement for missing information in the file and clarification points, which will allow completing the dossier for authorization and migrate to the authorization of the health registry.

The only pharmaceutical companies interested in selling their vaccines in Mexico

After evaluation of the file that the laboratories entered to obtain the health record Pfizer SA de CVfor the Comirnaty vacciney ModernaTx. Inc. (through its legal representative in Mexico, Asofarma SA de CV), for the vaccine Spikevax monovalentemissing elements were identified and pertinent clarifications were made, essential for the technical integration of the dossier.

Both were officially informed of the elements that they must support before the team of adjudicators of Cofepris to migrate to the authorization of health records.

This regulatory agency considers that the vaccines that currently have emergency use authorization are quality, safe and effective products, which need to complete the route with updated technical and administrative information.

Cofepris urges the population not to make indiscriminate use of any vaccine against Covid-19, since the risk-benefit of each application must be considered. The biologicals included in the National Vaccination Policy against the SARS-CoV-2 virus are universal and free. Cofepris reiterates that the application of vaccines outside the National Vaccination Policy must be under strict medical recommendation.
