BOLZANO. In Val Pusteria, teh Italian Railway Network is planning works in 2025 to adapt the railway to the Val di Riga bypass and bring it to the latest safety standards. At the same time, work is underway to connect the Pusteria Valley directly to the Brenner railway line. Safety works are also underway. Work will begin on the existing line for the new Val Pusteria railway from mid-December.The overhead lines will be replaced and the Etcs train control system will be installed.

How will the railway closures in 2024 and 2025 affect travel in the Pusteria Valley?
Interview with Transportation Expert Dr.Laura Menardi on Upcoming Railway Works in Val Pusteria
Editor: Welcome, Dr. Menardi! Thank you for joining us today. We’re excited to discuss the Italian Railway Network’s upcoming plans for the Val Pusteria area, particularly the enhancements slated for 2025. Can you start by giving us an overview of what these improvements entail?
Dr. menardi: Thank you for having me! The Italian Railway Network is set to undertake significant works aimed at modernizing and enhancing safety on the railway in Val Pusteria. One of the key projects involves the Val di Riga bypass, which will be adapted to meet the latest safety standards. Additionally, there will be a direct connection established between Pusteria Valley and the Brenner railway line, which is vital for improving regional connectivity.
Editor: That sounds promising. Can you elaborate on the safety measures included in this plan?
Dr. Menardi: Certainly! As part of the safety upgrades, existing overhead lines will be replaced, and a new European Train Control System, known as ETCS, will be installed. This advanced control mechanism is designed to enhance safety and optimize train operations across Europe. Furthermore, the Vandoies station will witness a restoration of its level crossing, which is crucial for pedestrian and vehicular safety.
Editor: The planned rail closure from December 2024 sounds significant. How will this impact commuters and travelers in the region?
Dr.Menardi: The closure of the fortezza-Brunico line for about a year will undoubtedly impact daily commuters. However, the railway authorities have put in place a replacement bus service that will operate every half hour, linking key stops including Bressanone and Brunico. This choice will help ensure that travelers aren’t left stranded, despite the rail line being closed.
Editor: Thank you for that overview. You mentioned the Brunico-San Candido line will also experience closures. What is the timeline for that, and what should passengers expect?
Dr. Menardi: Yes,the Brunico-San Candido line is scheduled to close for approximately 50 days from April to May 2025. During this time, the installation of the new ETCS will occur. Similar to the previous closure, there will be a replacement bus service every half hour for passengers during this period, which should help mitigate disruptions.
Editor: That’s reassuring for travelers! From your outlook as an expert, what are the broader implications of these improvements for the region?
Dr. Menardi: These upgrades are essential not just for safety, but they also represent a commitment to enhancing public transportation. Improved safety standards and more reliable service can attract more users to the rail system, promoting enduring travel options. Connecting Pusteria Valley with the Brenner line will facilitate easier access to larger metropolitan areas, which can have positive economic impacts as well.
Editor: Lastly, what practical advice would you offer to passengers who depend on these routes during the construction phases?
Dr. Menardi: I recommend that passengers stay informed about the scheduled work and service changes by regularly checking the Italian Railway Network’s website or mobile app.Planning trips in advance and allowing for extra travel time will also be crucial during this period. Utilizing the replacement bus services when the trains are unavailable will ensure continuity for their journeys.

Dr. Menardi: Thank you for having me! It’s been a pleasure discussing this crucial growth in our transportation infrastructure.
