Dramas that accumulate and worry. The Drôme prefecture announced on Friday a “significant increase” in police personnel in Valence, after the shooting death of a man the previous night, the second case in a few days against the backdrop of settling scores. A third man also died on the morning of this Saturday, but the investigation does not make it possible to link him, at this stage, to the two previous victims.
“In a context of settling of scores between bands”, the prefect of Drôme “confirms her total involvement in the fight against crime and drug trafficking in these neighborhoods”, indicated the prefecture in a press release.
A little after 2 a.m., on the night of Thursday to Friday, a man driving a scooter was injured by gunfire, said the Lyon prosecutor’s office. The vehicle caught fire, according to a police source.
When the police arrived, the victim’s clothes were on fire and despite the intervention of the emergency services, the man died on the spot, explained the prosecution. On Tuesday, a 29-year-old man was shot dead in the Fontbarlettes district of Valence and another person injured.
A hundred CRS mobilized
“Given the extent and gravity of the facts”, the investigations, entrusted to the judicial police of Valence and Lyon, are now under the authority of the specialized interregional jurisdiction (JIRS) of Lyon, specified the prefecture.
On the ground, “a hundred CRS, including the CRS-8 (a unit specializing in the fight against urban violence capable of being sent quickly to any point in France, editor’s note), as well as zonal reinforcements, will come support the staff of the DDSP26”, the departmental directorate of public security. Gendarmes from the Drôme will also be mobilized.
Saturday morning, another man was shot dead, still in Valence, confirmed the public prosecutor of Valence, Laurent de Caigny. “For the moment, there is no link that has been made with the two previous deaths,” he said, adding that the victim, who “was not far from forty”, was “known of the police and the justice system, in particular for narcotics cases”.
Since the beginning of the year, in the police zone of Valence, “more than 650 arrests have taken place under the authority of the public prosecutor in connection with around thirty cases related to trafficking, use or the resale of narcotics”, notes the prefecture. That is three more than in 2022, over the same period, figures which according to her reflect “the determined action of the State to disorganize the networks and to give no respite to offenders”.
