Aula Valladolid will be the rival of Super Amara Bera Bera in the quarterfinals of the Copa de la Reina to be held in Donostia between April 29 and May 1. The team from San Sebastian learned on Wednesday the path they will have to travel in order to win the seventh Cup in their history, in which they dodge until a hypothetical final against some of the strongest teams in the competition.

In the draw held at the Miramar Palace in the Gipuzkoan capital, Bera Bera had the option of choosing the side of the draw for which they wanted to compete due to their status as the host team. Bera Bera could have also opted to face Unicaja Banco Gijón in the first instance, but preferred to avoid that side of the draw to which Elche, the current champion of the tournament, finally fell.

In this way, Bera Bera will fight from the start with Aula Valladolid. In case of victory, the route of the Donostiarras in the semifinals would match them with the winner of the duel between Granollers and Guardés. The team from San Sebastian would get rid of Costa del Sol Málaga, the only team that has managed to beat Imanol Álvarez’s team this season, until a hypothetical final. In addition, they also avoided Rocasa and Gijón at first. The first quarterfinal match of the women from San Sebastian will be played on Friday, April 29 in Illunbe, with a time yet to be confirmed.

The Bera Bera coach, Imanol Álvarez, was in charge of announcing the final position of the San Sebastian team in the draw table. The Ermua coach considered that the decision they had to make was “difficult”, but argued that “we think that the other party is more powerful a priori”. «Playing against the Aula is always complicated, it always requires a lot. You had to choose one of the sides and we have chosen that, ”said the Biscayan coach.

This Tuesday also took place the draw for the Mini Cup, the tournament that the cadet teams of the eight clubs participating in the Cup will play at Gasca. Bera Bera was drawn in group B together with Rocasa, Málaga and Gijón. The A was formed by the Guardés, Valladolid, Elche and Granollers.

Promotion of women’s sports

The draw, held in one of the halls of the Miramar Palace, was attended by institutional representatives such as the president of the Handball Federation, Francisco Blázquez; the Councilor for Sports of the Donostia City Council, Martin Ibabe and the Deputy for Sports of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, Harkaitz Millán. Representatives of the participating teams also attended the event and took a family photograph at the end of the event.

Blázquez congratulated himself on bringing the “largest Spanish women’s handball event” to the capital of San Sebastian, after last year it had to be moved to Gran Canaria due to the pandemic. Millán and Ibabe, for their part, showed their enthusiasm for bringing the Cup to Donostia and highlighted the boost that an event of this type in the city represents for women’s sport.
