On January 27, 2019, the people of Phu Chinh village began to cut down two red oak trees, divided into 5 groups of wood with a weight from 550kg to more than 2,000kg. Up to now, after 4 years of felling and 4 auctions, the lot has not found a new owner. At the time of the initial auction, the value of the timber lot was about 146 billion VND, but no one bought it. In the next auctions, even though the price was reduced by 1/3 of the original value (about 100 billion VND), no one bought it because they thought it was too high compared to the real value.
Recently, on April 27, 2023, the Phu Chinh village community in collaboration with the Property Auction Center (Hanoi Department of Justice) held the 5th auction of the above red oak lot. The starting price for the entire batch of sapwood that is cut down from two red oak trees is 72 billion VND. At this auction, a giant woman from Yen Phong district (Bac Ninh province) was the lucky winner when she paid the price to buy a lot of sua wood at 73 billion VND, 1 billion VND higher than the starting price.
According to some local wood traders, the fact that the red oak lot has not been sold for more than 4 years is because it depends on the market and traders in China. In Vietnam, very few people have the need to buy sua wood. Besides, over the past 2 years is a time of prolonged epidemics with complicated developments, the Chinese market no longer buys massively as before, making it difficult to sell. Therefore, it is not easy to accurately predict the value of 3 red succulent trees cut down at Hoan Kiem Lake this time.
Before that, in August 2021, Lac Viet Auction Partnership (Hanoi) also held an online auction with the assets of 7 liquidated sapwood (dead trees) of the Administration Department of the Main Office. government. These 7 trees have a volume of 1,068m3 to 3,682m3 (total volume over 14.9m3) with a starting price of over 146 billion VND. After many bidding sessions, one customer finally won the auction, with a total amount of nearly 235 billion VND – the price does not include VAT.
