The Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels initiative will present a moving performance of Gisèle Vienne’s work Crowd, which it supports, at the Seoul International Performance on October 26th and 27th. It will be presented as the closing work at the Seoul Performing Arts Festival.
Founded in 2020, Van Cleef & Arpels’ Dance Reflections shares its choreographic heritage and supports artists and organizations developing new creative activities. The story of Van Cleef & Arpels’ Dance Reflection and Giselle Bienne began with the support of her work Portrait at the 2021 Paris Fall Festival. In 2022, Dance Reflection revived the repertoire work This is how you will disappear (2010) and unveiled it at the first Van Cleef & Arpels Dance Reflection Festival in London.
In the same year, the work Crowd was released in its original version in Los Angeles, and was also presented as a program for the second festival held in Hong Kong in 2023.
Gisèle Vienne is a French-Austrian artist, choreographer, and director. She completed her studies at the French National Puppetry School (École Supérieure Nationale des Arts de la Marionnette).
In the work Crowd, Giselle Bien continues her exploration by asking questions about the uniqueness of each individual and examining the relationships that form groups’ interactions.
The identity of the character created from the imagination of the dancers and writer Dennis Cooper was materialized through repeated revisions, and the work was gradually dismantled by the slowness and the crowd unfolding the potential power that contrasted with it. It leads to results.
The electronic music that appears together in the work expresses time as if distorted in a dreamlike way, making the audience encounter the boundary that exists between a dream and a trance. The 15 dancers gathered for the party unfold the choreography and create a wide composition like polyphonic music. It illuminates the mechanism that serves as the basis for expressing collective utopia.
In 2024, Dance Reflection is supporting Crowd’s tour performance in Asia. This work will be presented as the closing piece at the Seoul International Performing Arts Festival, and will also be presented as part of the season program at the National Theater in Taipei in early November.
Meanwhile, detailed information about the 2024 SPAF’s program can be found on the official website, and ticket reservations can be made on the Arco/Daehakro Arts Theater, Interpark Ticket, Daehakro Theater Quad, and National Theater websites.
