Dubbed the “hell of the north” and the “queen of the classics”, the cyclists covered 256.7 kilometers on Sunday, covering 29 pavement sectors divided into five levels of difficulty in the last 160 kilometers.

Almost 60 kilometers to the finish, van der Pool broke away from the leading group and within a couple of kilometers built up a one-minute lead. On the other hand, 25 kilometers to the finish line, his advantage had already increased to more than two minutes.

The Dutchman finished in five minutes and 25 minutes and 58 seconds and became the first cyclist in 11 years to win the Paris-Roubaix two years in a row.

Van der Pool finished three minutes ahead of his Belgian team-mate Jasper Philipsen, who was second, while Lidl-Trek’s Mads Pedersen and Germany’s Nils Polit (UAE) also dropped three minutes to finish third and fourth respectively.

Last year, when van der Pool won the solo victory, Philipsen was also second, and Wout van Aart completed the top three.

This year, the prestigious Paris-Roubaix bicycle ride took place for the 121st time without Latvian participation.
