An exhibition is dedicated to the last months of Vincent Van Gogh in Val-d’Oise. The painter, who was leaving a psychiatric hospital, was prolific before killing himself.

In May 1890, after a stay in a psychiatric hospital, Vincent Van Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise (Val-d’Oise) for a new start. He paints frantically, one or two paintings a day. But details intrigue his doctor: the touches of these paintings are thick and he paints large formats without human presence. Van Gogh feels alone and brooding. The blues, darker and darker, invade everything. “There is an association both with the feeling of unease and with the color blue”indicates Emmanuel Coquery, curator of the exhibition “Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. The last months”.

A final painting on the day of his suicide

The painter took with him his bottle of absinthe, but also his old demons. In his room, he hangs his self-portrait, which hides his severed ear. In his last painting, even the roots are tortured. That day, the painter went to kill himself in the fields. 133 years later, Van Gogh’s Portrait in Blue remains an icon in the minds of his many fans.
