An incident occurred where three radical environmental activists once again poured soup on Vincent van Gogh’s masterpiece ‘Sunflowers’. This occurred just hours after two members of the same environmental movement group were sentenced to prison for the same actions in 2022.
According to Reuters on the 27th (local time), three members of the British environmental activist group Two Just Stop Oil (JSO) held Van Gogh’s work ‘Sunflowers’ at the National Gallery in London on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the United States. Soup was poured on the work. In the case of ‘Sunflower’, it suffered a tomato soup attack two years ago.
The National Gallery reported that the three people who committed the soup attack were arrested by the police. It was also reported that the painting was not damaged.
To Just Stop Oil posted a video of the day’s actions on X. After throwing the soup, members said, “People who oppose the use of oil and gas are in prison,” and “We think these people are on the right side of history.”
The incident occurred hours after Two Just Stop Oil members Phoebe Plummer, 23, and Anna Holland, 22, were sentenced to two years and 20 months in prison respectively for throwing tomato soup at a Van Gogh painting. Plummer and Holland are accused of throwing tomato soup at ‘Sunflowers’ at the National Gallery in London in October 2022.
Judge Christopher Heyer ruled, “The two people have no right to do such a thing in the work ‘Sunflower,’” and “The two people’s arrogance deserves criticism.”
Holland’s lawyer, Kate McFadden, said she would appeal the ruling. He said the ruling “proves that the government is not interested in trying to curb climate change.”
