Mihály Varga the minister of finance announced on his social media page that the government does respect the independence of the central bank, and that it also aims to strengthen the transparency of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank, as well as ensure the frugal operation expected of state offices.
In his latest Facebook post, Mihály Varga announced: to this end, the Ministry of Finance, in consultation with the European Central Bank, is investigating the possibility of extending the supervisory board’s control powers to activities that do not affect the central bank’s basic tasks.
The Ministry of Finance also previously sought the opinion of the European Central Bank regarding the plan, and incorporated its comments into the proposal.
The proposal confirmed by the ECB does not affect the performance of the basic tasks of the MNB, it would only extend the powers of the supervisory board to other activities of the central bank, MTI wrote. These include ensuring the supervisory board’s prior approval authority in the case of economic decisions above a certain value limit, tightening the obligation to provide information, and imposing the obligation to report, Mihály Varga wrote in his post.
