In the five episodes that make up the portrait (I was about to write the obituary or eulogy, but I stopped in time) of Vasco Rossi there is nothing reckless. The most subversive moment is said, not shown, and it is this: «I survived the seventies, I survived the eighties, I survived the nineties, choosing to build a family, and leaving the stupid hotel. The most transgressive choice a rock star could make.” Who knows how crazy his many fans will be to hear such a declaration, accompanied by well-known notes.
«Vasco Rossi – The survivor» (Netflix), written by Igor Artibani and Guglielmo Ariè, directed by Pepsy Romanoff, is one of those miniseries approved by the press offices: never an uncertainty, never a discard, never an infringement as if “the human epic of the greatest Italian rocker” was very similar to that of Gianni Morandi or Albano Carrisi: childhood in Zocca (those from the mountains are considered louts by those from the plains, like us from Cuneo), the first musical competitions, the experience of free radio (PuntoRadio, with unreleased recordings) and, finally, the «Komandante», i.e. the oceanic concerts in stadiums and parks throughout Italy. But wasn’t it better to interview Massimiliano Parente, who wrote the most intelligent book on Vasco, instead of Gaetano Curreri or Floriano Fini?
No, because the fans wouldn’t have liked it. They love the Italian rock star: the transgression that becomes normality, always suspended between the damned and the twilight, with lyrics that seem to come from an advertising agency: «I came out of every hell and every paradise, always in time to rise on stage”. It is a long story of words, the images only serve to illustrate its naturalness. Vasco talks about his strawberry place: here is the house from which he saw the protagonist of «Albachiara» get off the bus, here is the house where he moved to the hills, here… The scheme is among the most tried and tested: interviews, unpublished archives, editing tight that marks the rhythm of the narrative and narrative arc that develops over the years, isolating phases and eras.
