Vassilis Karras breathed his last at the age of 70 on Christmas Eve.

According to the information, he was admitted to the hospital two days ago. He was suffering from coronavirus, while recently he was fighting cancer.

Vassilis Karras was one of the talented folk singers that our country has produced. His path in folk song has given us many gold and platinum records and remarkable collaborations with big names of Greek song.

Vasilis Kesoglides, as his real name is, was born on November 12, 1953 in Kokkinochori, Kavala. At the age of 10, he moved with his family to Thessaloniki, where he had his two siblings, Damianos and Anastasia.

He grew up in the city of Thessaloniki in the 60s and in 1969, at the age of 16, he made his first musical appearance at the night club “Prosfygas” in Evosmos, Thessaloniki. At the same time, he worked as a car mechanic, his second great love after singing. He had also worked in the engine room of the OSE in Thessaloniki, a fact that is reflected in his song “Ego agapi mou, ego”.

About his work as a car mechanic, he said: “Since my childhood, singing may have been in my blood, but I wanted to be a car mechanic. To do something about the smudge, that is, in general, which I achieved. But the germ of the artist is so great, that it defeats everything around. This germ, as you grow, grows with you and becomes no worse, my God. It takes you where you don’t want to go or where you never thought you would go. It is a germ that the artist carries and takes with him. It never dies.”

Within a few years, Vassilis Karras became the favorite folk singer of Greece. He has been given the title “The Lord of the Capsule” because he has sung like no one else the pain of… separation, while he had a steady course in his discography with over 40 records.

His records have gone gold and platinum, while his greatest recording success was the album “You’ve Made Me a Tramp”.

He collaborated with many composers and lyricists including Giorgos Theofanous, Evi Droutsa, Christos Dantes, Christos Nikolopoulos and Michalis Hatzigiannis.

On stage he sang with countless artists including Tolis Voskopoulos, Nikos Zoidakis, Pyx Lax, Angela Dimitriou, Konstantina, Kaiti Garbi, Pantelis Pantelidis and George Kakosios.
