Vatican City: Pope Francis reminded us to invoke the name of Jesus when we face temptations, or when we feel that the devil is leading us in the wrong direction. The Pope added that if we always stay close to the Lord, we will be able to resist the devil.

The Pope was addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican for midday prayer on Sunday and giving them a message. In the Gospel of Mark, the passage in which Jesus delivers a demon-possessed man (Mark 1:21-28) was the subject of the Pope’s reflection this week. The Holy Father reminded the believers that the devil wants to bind us too, but if we stay close to the Lord, we can resist him.

The devil wants to overwhelm us and bind us with his chains in a way that deprives us of our freedom. So the Pope said we must always be alert to his chains that bind our souls and hearts. The Holy Father warned us that there are different types of satanic chains that we have to face. They drain us of our love, energy and material goods. Thus we always become discontented and slaves of the devil.

Jesus sets us free

Jesus came to free us from satanic chains and the constant attacks of the devil – affirmed the Pope. Jesus delivers us from the powers of evil. So let us be careful never to enter into conversation with the devil. ‘But often the opposite happens.

Too often we allow ourselves to be bound by the devil’s chains. “We are destroying ourselves in such a way that we can’t save ourselves,” Papa said with anguish. But the Pope underlined that Christ teaches us never to enter into dialogue or make peace with the devil.

‘What should we do when temptations seem to overwhelm us?’ – asked the Holy Father. ‘Call Jesus’ – the Pope himself gave the answer. “Call Jesus to the same situations where we feel the chains of evil tightening around us,” the Pope continued.

Do not enter into conversation with the devil

‘Do not enter into any conversation with the devil. Because if he does, he will always win’ – warned the Holy Father. The Lord, by the power of His Spirit, repeats to the evil-doer thus to this day: ‘Go away. Leave that soul alone. Don’t divide the world, families and communities. May they live in peace. May the fruits of my spirit, not yours, abound.’

Instead of violence and hatred, Jesus wants freedom, peace and care to dawn everywhere. He wants love, joy and gentleness to reign everywhere – the Pope emphasized.

May love and happiness be everywhere

The Pope reminded us that Jesus wants our lives to be filled with love and joy, but for this to be possible constant vigilance is needed. We must be careful to grow in prayer and never converse with the devil. Only then, Jesus will be able to restore us – the Holy Father commented.

The Pope concluded his message by asking the Holy Mother for protection from the evil one and wishing everyone a good day.
