The Vatican Press Office issued the first report after the surgery to which Pope Francis underwent this Wednesday at the Gemelli Hospital.

“The surgical intervention has finished: it has developed without complications and has lasted three hours,” he reported on June 7.

As pointed out Vatican Newsthe director of the Vatican Press Office, Matteo Bruni, specified that as a precautionary measure all audiences with the Holy Father have been suspended until next Sunday, June 18.

The Pope was hospitalized this morning after presiding over the General Audience. Surgery was performed due to the risk of intestinal obstruction.

Bruni had previously indicated that Pope Francis would be subjected “under general anesthesia, to a laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery with prosthesis.”

“The operation, arranged in recent days by the medical team that assists the Holy Father, became necessary due to a closed laparocele that is causing recurrent, painful, and worsening subocclusive syndromes,” he added.

A laparocele is a hernia that forms over a scar resulting from surgery.
