Vaulx-en-Velin fire: six adults and four children died, corrects the prosecution

The complete identification of the ten victims who died in the fire of a building in Vaulx-en-Velin (Rhône) on the night of Thursday to Friday revealed that they were six adults and four children, a- we learned Sunday from the Lyon prosecutor’s office. A previous toll reported five minors among the ten dead. Twenty-four people were also injured in the fire, four of them seriously.

“We confirm that we count among the ten deceased victims four children and six adults”, specified Sunday morning the parquet floor. The latter added that no arrest had taken place since the opening of the investigation for “deliberate damage by fire resulting in death”. “The investigation is actively continuing,” he concluded.

“No trace of flammable product”

Saturday evening, the Lyon public prosecutor’s office had announced, in a press release, the identification of all the deceased victims, without further details. He had indicated that the expertise had still not allowed “to determine whether the origin of the fire (was) voluntary or accidental”. “No trace of flammable product was detected in the samples taken from the scene of the incident,” he said.

Earlier in the afternoon on Saturday, some 600 people had gathered on the forecourt of the Town Hall of Vaulx-en-Velin, to pay tribute to the victims.

The fire occurred at 3 a.m. on Friday in a seven-storey building, located in a working-class district undergoing urban renewal.

The fire caused residents to rush into the void, with one woman even throwing her son from the fourth floor to save his life, before jumping from her balcony herself.
