jpnn.com – JAKARTA – Indonesian rock climbing athlete who won the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Veddriq Leonardo, has been nominated for the award “The World Games Athlete of the Year 2024” released by the International World Games Association (IWGA).
Veddriq Leonardo is the only Indonesian representative out of 22 candidates from various individual and pair sports.
Veddriq’s name was proposed by the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) thanks to his brilliant achievements throughout 2024.
His success in making history as the first gold medalist in rock climbing at the 2024 Paris Olympics and recording the best time against Wu Peng from China in the men’s speed event, was the main reason for his candidacy.
Veddriq also won gold at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, United States, after defeating Kiromal Katibin, his compatriot.
His achievements in the 2024 IFSC World Cup Series also strengthen his position as a strong candidate for this award.
The IWGA establishes a voting process to determine the winner of this award in two stages.
The first stage will take place from 9-22 January 2025 at 12.00 GMT or 19.00 WIB. In this stage, each voter must cast two votes simultaneously for two candidates.
