Vehicle flow on toll roads grew 4.7%

The flow of vehicles on toll roads grew 4.7% in the last 12 months. During the period, light vehicles (cars, motorcycles and pickup trucks) saw a 5.8% increase in traffic, while heavy vehicles (trucks, buses and tractors) registered a growth of 1.3%.

The data comes from the ABCR index (Brazilian Association of Highway Concessionaires), a survey carried out by Melhores Rodovias do Brasil (formerly ABCR) in partnership with Tendência Consultorias, and was released this Friday (September 8, 2023).

In the year to date, the total volume of vehicles crossing toll booths increased by 5.9%, with light vehicles registering a growth of 7.4%, and heavy vehicles, 1.3%.

In August, this movement fell 0.4%. The retraction marks the end of a sequence of growth in the flow of vehicles at toll plazas that lasted 5 months. Last month, the toll flow index for light vehicles fell 0.5%, while that for heavy vehicles grew 1.2%.

Melhores Rodovias do Brasil explained that this drop in August was a reflection of the end of the holiday period historically recorded in July, but it also had an influence on economic indicators of household debt and default.

“The indicator captured the positive contribution from the July holidays, whose intensity surpassed previous years, given greater health security and the favorable context for family consumption. The loss of pace is also influenced by consumption limitations, such as high levels of debt and default, in addition to the slower pace of expansion in the creation of vacancies in the job market”, says an excerpt from the ABCR index.
