Chennai: “A committee consisting of retired judges and human rights activists should be formed to investigate whether the ashrams, orphanages and old age homes operating across Tamil Nadu are functioning properly,” said Velmurugan, president of the Tamil Nadu Life Rights Party.

In a statement issued by him in this regard, “It has caused a great shock that 143 people have been imprisoned and tortured in the Anbu Jyoti Ashram, which was operating in the Gundalapuliyur area near Villupuram, young women have been drugged and sexually assaulted, and many have mysteriously disappeared.

It has also been revealed that the people staying at the ashram were tortured in various ways. Many disabled women have been sexually harassed. They have given drugs to women and girls and sexually assaulted them. It is not known what happened to those over 21 who were there.

Jyoti Ashram has been functioning for the last 15 years without obtaining proper permission. They engage in human rights violations such as using those who are allowed to do agricultural work, letting them graze cows, beating those who do not do so with chains and subjecting them to torture, leaving them to be bitten by monkeys, and smuggling them to foreign countries.

It is welcome that the police have arrested 9 persons involved in this crime, Ashram administrator Anbu Zubin Baby, his wife Maria and employees under 13 sections. At the same time, the Ashram was to be taken over by the Government.

The CBCID should order an inquiry into the alleged human rights violations, sexual violence and missing persons at the ashram. Action should be taken against the Social Welfare Department officials who allowed Anbu Jyoti Ashram to operate without permission.

The Tamil Nadu Life Rights Party requests that a committee consisting of retired judges and human rights activists should be formed to investigate whether ashrams, orphanages and old age homes are functioning properly across Tamil Nadu. He said this.
