U-17 World Cup remains without venue

In May 2022, the Peruvian government announced that it would host the U-17 World Cup. Then-President Pedro Castillo created a multisectoral working group made up of representatives of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) and various ministries to carry out all the preparations for the sporting event.

However, the remodeling work on the stadiums that would receive the 24 teams between November and December 2023 was not yet ready at the beginning of April of this year. In fact, they were paralyzed as a result of the constant rains and Cyclone Yaku, according to information from the newspaper The country from Spain.

Given the non-compliance by Peru, FIFA decided to withdraw the country as the venue for the international sporting event.

“The measure was taken due to the inability of the host country to fulfill its commitments to complete the infrastructure required to organize the tournament. Despite having a very positive working relationship between FIFA and the FPF (Peruvian Football Federation), it has been determined that there is not enough time to secure the required investment and complete the necessary work,” the agency said in a publication from April 3.

The last time Peru hosted a Soccer World Cup was in 2005, when it just held the Under-17 category.
