Maduro assured that Venezuela sought dialogue.

President Nicolás Maduro stated that he is convinced that with his actions and the support of Venezuelans, Guyana will have to sit down to discuss the territorial dispute directly with Venezuela, outside the International Court of Justice.

Venezuela and Guyana dispute the so-called Essequibo, a continental territory of about 159,500 square kilometers that the Venezuelans have claimed as theirs since 1897, since that region was under their jurisdiction during the Spanish colony. The territory is rich in oil, gas, gold, among other natural resources.

Maduro assured that Venezuela always sought direct dialogue with Guyana, but noted that that nation abandoned the negotiations and began to distribute licenses to explore and exploit oil.
