Venezuela WBC: Jhonathan Díaz Replaces Injured Pablo López on Roster

by Liam O'Connor Sports Editor

The Venezuelan national baseball team has adjusted its roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic following a significant injury to starting pitcher Pablo López. López, a key player expected to lead the team’s pitching rotation, will undergo Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for an extended period, potentially the entire 2026 MLB season. The news, initially reported by several sources including MSN and CBS News, represents a blow to Venezuela’s chances in the international tournament.

In López’s place, the Venezuelan team has called up left-handed pitcher Jhonathan Díaz, who currently plays for the Seattle Mariners organization. Díaz, a 29-year-old native of Valencia, Venezuela, has spent much of his career developing in the minor leagues, with some appearances in the major leagues. He debuted in the majors with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 before joining the Mariners. His MLB career includes a 4.66 ERA over 46.1 innings pitched, during which he has recorded 33 strikeouts, demonstrating a versatile arm that has been utilized in both relief and starting roles.

A Significant Loss for Venezuela’s Pitching Staff

The injury to López is particularly impactful given his expected role as the ace of the Venezuelan pitching staff. The right-hander was coming off a strong season with the Minnesota Twins and was poised to be a key contributor in the World Baseball Classic. The Tommy John surgery, a reconstructive procedure for the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow, typically requires a recovery period of 12-18 months, effectively ruling López out for the entirety of the 2026 MLB season, as reported by multiple sources.

Although Díaz provides a needed arm, he doesn’t entirely fill the void left by López. The Venezuelan coaching staff views Díaz as a versatile option, capable of contributing both as a starter and out of the bullpen. Manager Omar López may also utilize the left-hander as a specialist against left-handed batters, adding a strategic element to the team’s pitching approach.

Other Roster Adjustments for the Vinotinto

Venezuela has also announced that José Alvarado and Oddainer Mosqueda will not be part of the team competing in the Classic, though the reasons for their absence have not been disclosed. Alvarado was considered a potential setup man or even closer for the team, adding to the challenges facing the Venezuelan pitching staff.

Venezuela’s Group and Tournament Outlook

Despite these roster changes, Venezuela remains a competitive team with a roster featuring established stars like Ronald Acuña Jr., Salvador Pérez, and Luis Arráez, alongside emerging talents. The team, known as the “Vinotinto” (Burgundy), will begin its World Baseball Classic journey on March 6th as part of Group D, which will be held in Miami. They will face tough competition from the Dominican Republic, the Netherlands, Israel, and Nicaragua.

López’s absence also means he will miss his second consecutive World Baseball Classic appearance. In the 2023 tournament, he posted a 1-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 innings pitched, helping Venezuela reach the quarterfinals.

The addition of Díaz, who appeared in only 1.1 innings with the Mariners in 2025, offers the Venezuelan coaching staff a versatile option in the rotation or in the bullpen, though it does not completely replace the weight that Pablo López would have had as the leader of the rotation. Of course, the presence of the sinister injects youth and versatility into manager Omar López’s team of pitchers, who could also use the former as a specialist against left-handed players.

As the World Baseball Classic approaches, Venezuela will look to navigate these challenges and field a competitive team. The tournament promises exciting baseball action, and the Vinotinto will aim to make a strong showing despite the setback of losing their ace pitcher.

The team will continue to prepare for the tournament, with further roster updates and training sessions expected in the coming weeks. Fans can find the latest information and schedules on the official World Baseball Classic website.
