Venezuelan court confirms Maduro’s re-election / Day

Maduro hailed the verdict, saying it was “historic and powerful.”

In the judgment read by the president of the court, Carislia Rodríguez, the court affirmed that it has “undisputedly approved the election materials and confirms the results of the presidential election held by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on July 28, 2024”.

According to them, the current head of state won the election.

Maduro himself had earlier this month asked the court to review the election, in which, according to the CNE, he defeated opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez with 52% of the votes cast.

The CNE did not provide a breakdown of results by polling station, saying it had fallen victim to a cyber attack.

Observers, however, believe that the alleged case of hacking is a pretext to withhold voting results.

The opposition says its tally of polling results shows Gonzalez won more than two-thirds of the vote.

“To the judges of the court: no decision will replace the will of the people. The country and the world know of your partiality and therefore of your inability to resolve this conflict,” Gonzalez said on social media on Thursday.

“Your ruling will only worsen the crisis.”

Rodriguez had indicated earlier this month that the court’s ruling would be “final.”

Official sources report that 25 people lost their lives, 192 were injured and 2,400 were detained in the election-related protests.
