The Venezuelans Emisael Jaramillo and Víctor Barboza Jr, with outstanding performances at Gulfstream Park, will participate in the 150th edition of the Kentucky Derby, announced for next Saturday, May 4 on the Churchill Downs sand, at a distance of 2,000 meters.
The Creole team will be responsible for the performance of Grand Mo The First, a son of Uncle Mo in Lilies So Fair, by Gigant’s Causeway, winner of two races in six performances, and third of Domestic Product in the Tampa Bay Derby and third of Fiercenes in the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park, ridden by the stellar Emisael Jaramillo.
Grand Mo The First, with 40 qualifying points and first alternate, enters the race due to the defection of Deterministic, whose owners preferred to skip the Derby to compete in another race on the New York circuit.
It must be taken into account that Rich Strike, winner of the 2022 edition driven by Venezuelan Sonny León, also arrived at the race after two desertions.

Jaramillo and Barboza Jr will try to emulate the feat achieved by Gustavo Ávila, Juan Arias, Sonny León, Javier José Castellano and Gustavo Delgado Socorro, the only Creoles to obtain the also called Race of the Roses, which opens the cycle of the American Triple Crown and which complete the Preakness Stakes in Pimlico, Baltimore and the Belmont Stakes that this year is scheduled to be held at the Saratoga Arena, in Saratoga Springs in New York.
So far, the favoritism of the race is dominated by Sierra Leone and Fierceness, while the undefeated in five performances, Forever Young, will try to overcome the Japanese equestrian team.
“If everything goes well, in the next few days we will be traveling on Thursday the 25th to Churchill Downs and the jockey of our horse in the Derby is and will always be Emisael Jaramillo, with whom I have had more than 400 wins,” Barboza wrote in his account.
