After collecting information from 80% of voting machines, the head of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela, Elvis Amoroso, announced that N. Maduro received 51% of the votes, while 44% of those who wished voted for E. González.

The opposition, on the other hand, announced that its candidate E. González won with 70% of the vote, and insisted that he should be considered the legally elected president. The opposition also called on foreign countries not to recognize the declaration of N. Maduro as elected president. The opposition representatives expressed their determination to challenge the announced election results and to have ballots from all voting machines presented to prevent suspicions of falsification of the election results.

In the elections held on Sunday, the opposition had agreed to support one candidate – E. González – after two other opposition representatives were not allowed to run. Polls before the elections predicted that E. González would convincingly defeat N. Maduro, who has been in office for 11 years. The opposition admitted that the government might try to falsify the election results, but expressed hope that E. Gonzalez’s victory would be so convincing that it would not allow N. Maduro’s administration to “steal the election”.

Representatives of several foreign countries have already expressed skepticism about the election results announced by the National Electoral Council of Venezuela, the BBC reports. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has stated that “the US has serious concerns that the declared election result does not reflect the will or vote of the Venezuelan people”. The President of Chile, Gavrjels Borich, said that the declared result “is hard to believe”. He demanded that the election process be evaluated openly and that international observers not blindly trust the government’s version of the election results.

In turn, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated “Brother Maduro” on his victory and announced that “the dignity and courage of the Venezuelan people have triumphed over pressure and manipulation.”
