It was an unusually dark and warm night when the magic began to work. The sky was pitch black, as was the water, the lamps in the bars formed little islands of light, and even though it was the end of October, the bars along the Rio della Misericordia had moved their chairs and tables outside.
We sat in front of a bar, drinking digestives and feeling a sleepy serenity. No, even here in Cannaregio, at the northwestern end of the city, we were not in the real, authentic, tourism-free Venice, simply because this Venice does not exist: without visitors, the beautiful city would be empty, bankrupt and sad. The tourists sitting in the bars here were just younger, prettier, friendlier to look at than the crowds that fill the streets between the Giardini, San Marco and Rialto Bridges.
