At the beginning of 2014, Jourová sat in the government of Prime Minister Bohuslav Sobotka (ČSSD) as Minister for Regional Development for the ANO movement, and subsequently moved to the European Commission. She remains a member of the ANO movement to this day. “I will see if my vision of the world will be compatible, for example, with the YES campaign to the European Parliament and in general with the overall direction,” she told Denik N.
Last week, MEPs Martina Dlabajová and Dita Charanzová announced that next year they will not run for ANO in the European Parliament. Dlabajová pointed to the convergence of ANO and SPD, Charanzová said that she does not agree with the current conservative and nationalist direction of the movement.
Jourová noted that the inclination of the ANO movement towards conservatism or a certain nationalism does not necessarily need to be addressed at the moment. But he is watching how the campaign for the European Parliament is getting underway. “We all develop in some way. I have to say that maybe for some I am a boringly stable liberal democrat – a little left of center, I would say, as I follow myself. But the moment the movement goes somewhere where you can no longer see it for yourself, it has to end.” he says.
He has long-term disagreements with the chairman of the ANO movement, Andrej Babiš, regarding Europe. “Chairman Babiš is setting a tone that I do not agree with. Because for him Europe is a space for struggle, for me Europe is a space for cooperation. We don’t understand each other on this for a long time. Moreover, Europe is the environment that pulls the Czech Republic upwards, we can grow in it,” says Jourová.
After the end of the mandate in the commission, Jourová is attracted by the academic sphere or helping Ukraine. “I would like to do something where I will be in contact with young people. I am very attracted to academia, to teach. This is the main direction of my imagination when I imagine myself in two years’ time,” she stated. At the same time, he is also considering a second path, which involves abroad. It would be tempting to help Ukraine on its way to the European Union. “The reform work in relation to her entry will take some time and I could be quite useful there. I know the legal requirements of the European Union and I think that I would be able to function also from the point of view of language,” added.
