Vice President Verónica Abad says it has been very difficult for her to “be able to look the Mexican ambassador to Israel in the face” after the attack on the Mexican embassy in Quito.

Ecuador’s vice president and ambassador to Israel, Verónica Abad, who could temporarily assume presidential duties if President Daniel Noboa runs for reelection, expressed her openness to the possibility of promoting dialogue with Mexico, which broke off diplomatic relations after the assault on its embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas, former vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017).

The Ecuadorian Constitution states that in the event of a temporary absence of the head of state, he must be replaced by his vice president.

Abad told EFE that it is “inconceivable to literally attack private property, and even more so that of another country,” which is protected by international law.

The vice president, with whom Noboa has maintained a marked distance since the campaign for the second round of elections, said that it has been very difficult for her to “be able to look the Mexican ambassador to Israel in the face” after the attack on the Mexican embassy.

“It is really a shame that Ecuador has been able to resolve its problems in this way,” he stressed, adding that serious dialogue should be encouraged.

Abad commented that, if the case arises, he will analyze all the information, and a rapprochement could be encouraged. “That has to happen, the actions of either visiting us or asking them to visit us, or opening a gap, but something has to be done,” he said.

Asked if, in her eventual capacity as interim head of state, she would seek to open the door to resolve the diplomatic situation with Mexico, Abad replied: “Correct.”

On April 5, Noboa ordered the police to enter the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest Glas, former vice president of Rafael Correa (2007-2017), to whom the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had granted diplomatic asylum, although he had an arrest warrant against him for a corruption case in which he is accused.

Glas, who denies the charges against him and declares himself a politically persecuted person, was one of the strongmen of Correa’s government and has been held in La Roca, Ecuador’s maximum security prison, since his last arrest, as he had yet to finish serving an eight-year prison sentence for two corruption convictions handed down in 2017 and 2020.

Meanwhile, Mexico and Ecuador have counter-sued each other at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, accusing each other of having violated international conventions on diplomatic relations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility of the Noboa Government, Gabriela Sommerfeld, will face an impeachment trial that the opposition has initiated in the National Assembly against her in a process derived from the invasion of the Mexican Embassy.
