Roelofarendsveen – The WIJ Presenteert Foundation, in collaboration with Dementia Vriendelijk Kaag en Braassem, is proud to present the theater performance VerpleegThuis. This interactive theater lecture, based on Teun Toebes’ book of the same name, will be showcased at Poco Más on Sunday afternoon, October 22.
Teun Toebes, a geriatric nurse, understands the challenges that arise when the mind and body lose connection. Despite being only 24 years old and in good health, Teun lives and works with people suffering from dementia in a closed ward at a nursing home. Through a collection of humorous, heartwarming, and poignant anecdotes, Teun takes the audience on a journey into a world they thought they knew. His engaging and disarming storytelling sheds new light on the lives of individuals with dementia.
“Forever human” is the central message that Teun conveys in his performance. By changing one’s perception, everything can be viewed in a different light. People with dementia maintain their humanity, even as the disease progresses. Teun’s experience in the nursing home has provided him with answers to his existential questions, leading him to champion the transformation of nursing homes into true homes for residents.
