“IS a jazz reinterpretation of opera arias, and Neapolitan classics “Journey to Italy”. Songs that we treated as Americans do with their standards ». Marco Zurzolo thus introduces the fourth and last disc of his collection co-produced with “Corriere del Mezzogiorno” and Bcc Napoli, which will be distributed on newsstands with the newspaper tomorrow at a cost of 5.99 euros.

And the Neapolitan saxophonist is right, because like the great African-American musicians they did with classical-modern arias for example by Gershwin (“Summertime”) or with film soundtracks such as “My favorite things” taken from “The sound of music To give some examples, Zurzolo and his companions performed with arias by Donizetti, Verdi and Puccini.

«The project – he continues – was born from bassist Gigi De Rienzo. The idea was to draw on our culture, that of melodrama but also that of the Neapolitan songwriter and beyond, precisely to enhance our immense musical heritage, without sinning for xenophilia ». A record in which the national tradition is given a splash of contemporaneity with an international flavor, bringing the world to confront the Italian and Neapolitan musical legend. How? Simple, creating a quartet of great quality for improvisational mood, interplay ability and remarkable rhythmic sense, composed of Marco on alto sax with De Rienzo on bass and keyboards, Carlo Fimiani on electric guitars and synths and Vittorio Riva on drums.

Together for a “journey”, as the title of the album states, which starts from Giuseppe Verdi’s famous aria, “Semper Libera”, taken from “La Traviata”, a live preview of which was also offered in the concert of the zoological station di Portici for «Casa Corriere», of which these CDs represent the soundtrack. And again «Amami Alfredo», from the same Verdi opera, before launching into other atmospheres with the combined reinterpretation of two iconic soundtracks taken from the films «A citizen above all suspicion» and «Il clan dei Siciliani», both signed by the great Ennio Morricone and marked by the use of the harp, an instrument dear to the Roman composer. Then we turn to Naples and its illustrious songbook with an original version of «Core ‘ngrato», a motif of 1911 by Cardillo and Cordiferro which invokes the legendary Catarì, «Fenesta vascia», «Vulumbrella» and «Sinnò me moro». And then return to the opera with “I lived of art, I lived of love” and “O mio Babbino caro”, poignant arias by Puccini, and “Una furtiva lagrima” by Donizetti. Then “When when when” by Tony Renis, famous all over the world, and “Saturno”, the ending theme of a Rai of the past.
