Due to the fact that media organizations store information not only about subscribers but also about workers, they continue to be common targets for hackers. According to documents filed with the Maine Attorney General, a data breach involving Vice Media led to the disclosure of personal information and financial data belonging to more than 1,700 people.

According to the report filed on January 26 by Vice Media, the data breach involved the use of Social Security numbers and affected 1,724 people.

In a second filing five days later, the company said the breach also involved bank account numbers, credit and debit card numbers, as well as other account-related information such as security codes, access codes, passwords and pin.

The media organization contacted a cybersecurity firm to examine the vulnerability, and the investigation revealed that hackers managed to break into an internal Vice email account. The corporation has said that the investigation into what personally identifiable information was compromised and the search for the current addresses of all victims will continue until January 25, 2023.

There is no indication in the cards as to whether any additional information was compromised during the event. It is not clear if the letters refer to separate instances or the same cyberattack. According to the January 26 file, the security breach was detected on April 4, even though the January 31 file said it was identified on December 19.

By working with Equifax, victims can get one year of identity and credit monitoring services, as well as services to restore their identities, after the company suffered a data breach. The plan offers identity theft insurance for up to $1 million.
