Since this month of January, the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in Cuenca has activated the electrophysiology service, a specialty that is responsible for the management and treatment of heart rhythm disorders. Thanks to this implementation, the placement of pacemakers was resumed for the benefit of patients in the community.

“We implanted a dual-chamber pacemaker in a patient with a diagnosis of bifascicular block plus paroxysmal third-degree atrioventricular block. The patient will receive adequate follow-up to evaluate the operation of the device,” said cardiologist Xavier Pinos, a specialist in invasive clinical electrophysiology.

Segundo Jara, 76 years old, is the beneficiary of the implant. “The doctor has told me that with the pacemaker I will feel fine and return to normality, due to my problem I was very tired and agitated, now I will be able to walk, run and work”.

Slow arrhythmias (bradyarrhythmias) generally require a pacemaker. There is a minimum of two patients per month who need this implant to achieve normal heart function. The implantation of a bicameral pacemaker (two leads) in a private entity has an approximate cost of 5,500 to 6,000 dollars, while in this health home the patients benefit free of charge.

Currently the batteries of the device have a duration of between 12 to 15 years, after that time the generator is changed, which will extend another similar period of duration of the device.

The Ministry of Public Health, through the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, works on the implementation of new health services to meet the needs of patients who come daily from the provinces of zone 6 and other parts of the country.
