Vicky Kaushal, who started his acting career with the film ‘Masaan’, is in the news these days for the film ‘Bad News’. In an exclusive interview with Navbharat Times, Vicky said that his father did not want him to join the film industry. But the actor felt suffocated in a 9 to 5 job.

Vicky Kaushal, who recently received praise for his role in ‘Sam Bahadur’, showed through his first film ‘Masaan’ that he can break the mold of a traditional hero and make his own space. Vicky, who was recently busy shooting for ‘Chhava’, is in the news these days because of ‘Bad News’. In this special interview, he talks about many issues like the turning point of his life, intimate scenes, social media, speculations of becoming a father. The song ‘Tauba Tauba’ from your film is being liked a lot, but many people have also told you on social media that why are you getting so close in this song after getting married (to Katrina Kaif)? How do you view the aspect of social media?
-We work for the audience. We artists work so that an opinion is formed about us. People discuss about us. Now sometimes people like our work, sometimes they don’t, so that discussion will happen. You can’t always expect positive reactions on social media. I don’t take such reactions seriously. Our relationship with the audience is also the same. When we started our career, we wanted the audience to accept us in such a way that they start talking to us. Now they are doing it. For me, the audience is king. They are the king maker.

Being a hero, do you feel more responsible during intimate scenes? Do you have to make your heroine feel comfortable as well?
-At such times, there is a sensitive atmosphere on the set. But it is not a science like flying a rocket. Now if it happens on the set, it is a scene work, where we create a scene through characters, emotions and acting. We have to take utmost care that no one feels uncomfortable. Neither you, nor your co-actors.

You had completed your engineering studies, but then what was the turning point when you decided to become an actor?
-The turning point of my career came when we were taken for a field trip to a multinational company. We were told there that when you leave college and start working, your work culture will be like this. When I went there with my batch, I realized that I cannot be happy there. This world is not for me and neither am I for this world. I started feeling suffocated there. I realized that I cannot do a 9 to 5 job on a computer. It was not that I was a failure in studies. I was good at studies. I had also received a job letter from a company, but I realized that if I stayed there, I would fail. Meanwhile, I was active on stage. I used to participate a lot in dance and drama in school, college and society and then I realized that I was getting the most happiness there. To be honest, before that job letter, I was just flowing with the flow. Seeing others, I also used to talk about doing post graduation. But then I decided that I just want to pursue acting.

When you expressed your desire to become an actor, what was the reaction of your action director father Raj Kaushal?
-First he became very sad. He suffered a lot in his youth and got us educated. Moreover our line is very uncertain and insecure. You never know where the next job will come from. He said that I worked so hard only so that there is someone in our house who has a 9 to 5 job. Who gets monthly salary, gets Saturday-Sunday off, who is secure. He said that why am I leaving a good job and joining this line, but when I told him that I feel suffocated there, he understood, he showed faith in me and I moved forward. It was a miracle for me that I got clicked in my first film ‘Masaan’, because I had not done anything unique. Even before me actors have been working hard and doing good work. I would like to give all the credit to God, when that film came into my lap.

Your work in your last film ‘Sam Bahadur’ was highly praised, but the same magic was not seen at the box office?
-It is not like that. Still the film earned 95 crores at the box office. It crossed 100 crores worldwide. I had worked very hard for the film. After ‘Uri’, whenever I do army based films, I feel very happy because I get a chance to interact with the army. My purpose behind doing the film is to show the army truthfully, yes the producer’s money should be covered, apart from this I do not think much about earning. If the army people say that you have shown the army truthfully, then this is my real earning.

For the past few days, there are rumours that Katrina is going to become a mother and you are going to become a father? – That is just a rumour. Just speculations. When this news is true, I will be most happy to share it. All of you please wait for me to share it.
