The Azerbaijani team achieved their best-ever result in the Olympic Games, securing two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals in Paris.
Beyond the podium finishes, the performance showcased the selfless spirit of many athletes who wrote their own inspiring stories. Paris witnessed numerous bright moments, records, and remarkable achievements. Notably, the judo team reached new heights, claiming their first-ever gold and silver medals, with Hidayat Heydarov and Zelim Kotsoyev claiming victory in their respective weight classes.
Gashim Magomedov, despite battling an injury, fought valiantly and reached the final in the 58 kg category. His determination and spirit were evident, showcasing his potential to become an Olympic champion in the future.
Alfonso Dominguez upgraded his Tokyo bronze to a silver in the 92 kg weight class. Despite losing in the final, he defeated two-time Olympic champion De La Cruz and showcased his resilience and determination.
While the team fell short of their pre-Olympic expectations, securing only bronze medals, their performance was still commendable. Notable individual achievements include Khasrat Dzhafarov’s bronze in the 67 kg freestyle wrestling and Giorgi Meshvildishvili’s and Magomedkhan Magomedov’s bronzes in the 125 kg and 97 kg freestyle wrestling categories respectively.
The Azerbaijani team also impressed in the group exercises, finishing fifth in the all-around final. Their captivating compositions received widespread applause from the audience.
These memorable moments collectively formed a successful Olympic experience for Azerbaijani sports. While some medals remained elusive, there is ample time to prepare for the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
