Dubai: The general perception is that the pitch at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium is not very favorable for batters. A new record was hatched when the best scores were produced in the life-or-death battle to secure the Super Four in the Asia Cup. Lanka chased the highest target of T20 International in UAE and became the winning team. Dubai Cricket Stadium also witnessed Lanka’s second highest winning run chase in the T20 format.

Batting first in Dubai, Bangladesh set a winning target of 184 runs in front of Lanka. It was won by Lanka in 19.2 overs for the loss of eight wickets. This is the highest winning run chase by a team in a T20 International in the UAE. The previous record was held in Dubai in 2016 when Afghanistan chased down 180 runs to win. Lanka also got another advantage in the match. This is Sri Lanka’s second highest winning run chase in T20Is. In 2018, they chased down a target of 194 runs to win against Bangladesh in Mirpur. The third came in 2022 against the Aussies at Pallekele, chasing a target of 177 runs.

After losing the toss, Bangladesh scored 183 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. Mehidi Hasan who scored 38 runs off 26 balls, captain Shakib Al Hasan who scored 24 runs off 22 balls, Afif Hossain who scored 39 runs off 22 balls, Mohammadullah who scored 27 runs off 22 balls and Mohadek Hossain who scored 24 runs off 9 balls brought Bangladesh to a good level. Vanindu Hazaranka and Chamika Karunaratne took two wickets each for Lanka. Dilshan Madhushanaka, Mahesh Thikshana and Asita Fernando took one wicket each.

In reply, Path, Nisanka and Kushal Mendis gave Lanka 45 wickets in the opening wicket, but then they stumbled. Wicketkeeper Kushal Mendis was the top scorer for Lanka with 60 runs off 37 balls while Chamika Asalanka(1), Danushka Gunathilaka(11) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa(2) failed. Only Shanaka, who scored 45 runs off 33 balls, found his footing later. Chamika, who scored 16 runs in 10 balls, was run out and it was a huge blow for Lanka. But with four balls left in Mehidi Hasan’s last over, who needed eight runs to win, Asita Fernando (10) and Mahish Tishna (0) gifted Lanka a two-wicket win and a Super Four ticket.
