Dillon Reeves, aged 13, noticed that something was wrong and jumped out of his seat five rows behind to take control of the wheel, the BBC reports.
Video footage of the incident shows the bus driver radioing to officials that he is not feeling well and may need to pull over.
Shortly after, the driver loses control and the students are heard screaming as the bus begins to veer off its lane.
Dillon saw the “driver in distress” and “walked in front of the bus and helped stop it.”
After stopping the bus. Dillon yells for someone to call 911 “now”.
The story reached the national level,
“We are very proud of you for your heroic actions!” was one of the many messages the boy received.
When the police called Dillon’s parents, Dillon’s father, Steve Reeves, first asked “what the hell did he do?”.
The officers replied: “no, your son is a hero”, according to local media.
