Arche enables untrained children to take lessons on site

STORY: Good morning greetings from the welcome class in Berlin-Wedding. This is how the refugee children from Ukraine start the day here in the capital and learn in a playful way right from the first minute. And the children are happy about this opportunity: O-TON POLINA SHEVCHUK, UKRAINIAN GIRL, 8 YEARS OLD: “I think learning German is very important. I really want to learn German because I want to go abroad later.” O-TON MILA, UKRAINIAN GIRL, 6 YEARS OLD: “I really like it here. I’m really looking forward to coming here. It’s a lot of fun.” Tatyana Gubskaya still worked as a primary school teacher in Kyiv. Now she is supporting a class of Ukrainian children at the Arche during lessons: O-TON TATJANA GUBSKAYA: “I think it’s great that the children are also learning German, because they are in this environment too and they have to make themselves understood here . Therefore, the more German teachers we can have, the better.” However, German is only a small part of the course. The children will continue to be taught by two Ukrainian elementary school teachers according to the Ukrainian curriculum as far as possible. According to official figures, more than 280,000 refugees from Ukraine have already come to Germany. However, the true number is likely to be significantly higher because not all refugees register officially and often find a first home in private accommodation.
