by time news

Risk of a “second Chernobyl” at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant? The site of this Ukrainian power plant, the largest in Europe, was bombed for the second time in just over 24 hours this weekend. Moscow and kyiv blame each other for these strikes.

“The Zelensky regime has committed a new act of nuclear terrorism,” said Igor Konashenkov, spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense, while the plant has been under Kremlin control since March. “Any bombardment of this site is a shameless crime, an act of terror”, reacted for his part, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

“A real risk of nuclear disaster”

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed concern at a press conference in Tokyo. “Any attack on nuclear power plants is a suicidal thing. I hope these attacks will end,” he said. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also says he is “very concerned about the extremely real risk of nuclear disaster which threatens public health and the environment in Ukraine and elsewhere”.
