Powerful Typhoon Shanshan hit Kagoshima Prefecture in southwestern Japan, killing at least 3 people.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the typhoon, with winds of up to 198 kilometers per hour, made landfall near the city of Satsumasendai on the southwestern island of Kyushu this morning.

The Meteorological Agency expected that “the storm will approach the central and eastern regions, including the capital, Tokyo, during the weekend.”

Authorities have warned that Shanshan could be one of the strongest storms ever to hit the region, and local governments have issued evacuation orders for millions of residents in several areas.

“Three people were killed, one is missing, two are seriously injured and five are slightly injured due to the typhoon,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said, adding: “Since this typhoon is moving slowly, the total amount of rainfall may be quite large.”

According to Reuters, Kyushu Electric Power Company announced that “more than 250,000 homes in seven regions are suffering from power outages.”

Airlines have decided to “cancel more than 600 domestic flights, and train services have been suspended in many areas of Kyushu.”
