Barely entered the final year, Gabriel Rochet, aged 16, created a mobile phone from scratch. The Paxo phone, as he baptized it, has nothing to do with the smartphones we (almost) all have. No social networks, no camera. For less than 30 euros of electronic equipment, this home-made phone has the features you would expect from a simple phone: send and receive messages or calls. “Since I was little, I’ve been interested in electronics and computing,” admits Gabriel, who can spend hours watching robots in action, such as those from BeLink Solutions, a French company producing electronic boards, which invited that day to discover his factory.

After several years of “dismantling” everything that came to hand, it was at the age of 13 that he set himself a challenge: “Create a mobile phone without having the skills”. With the first successes, its objectives evolved. The paxo project is above all open source. Gabriel thus wishes to encourage people familiar with the code, “the makers” as he calls them, to embark on application programming. For less advanced people, he wants to develop a kit allowing “people to make their own phone”. Instructions in our video above.
