The government decision to charge toll on the Palín-Escuintla highway caused a strong discussion during the plenary session on Wednesday, April 19.
It all started when a motion was filed to know a operative point where it was recommended to the Executive not to collect tolls cWhen they retake control of the Palín-Escuintla highway.
Although several deputies spoke out against the collection that the General Directorate of Roads plans to make, the operative paragraph, proposed by deputy Evelyn Morayata, it only added 58 votes, so it was improbable.
About the charge
As of Monday, May 1, 2023, the General Directorate of Roads of the Ministry of Communications, will take control of the toll and maintenance of the Palín Escuintla Highway. After concluding the 25-year concession that began during the government of Álvaro Arzú, the company Marhnos will deliver the 22 kilometers to the authorities on April 30.
For the General Directorate of Roads to take charge of toll collection, the Ministry of Communications approved Government Agreement 60-2023, which reforms Government Agreement 619-2003, which allows that entity to take control of the payment for the passage to the South Coast.
