Limited transport on Thursday and calls for caution: authorities have increased warnings as powerful storm Ciaran prepares to hit. In Finistère, placed on red alert, the small town of Treffiagat has prepared to best face the raging elements.

Météo France warns that the storm will cause a “remarkable wave-submersion phenomenon (…) The surge of large and powerful waves, associated with relatively high sea levels, requires very particular vigilance”. On the village beach, Guillaume Esteva-Kermal, the flood submersion manager for the Bigouden region, coordinates the village protection work. “We refill the dune, we add sand,” explains the site manager among the excavators.

As a precaution, the homes closest to the coast were evacuated by the authorities. Accompanied by the police and firefighters, the mayor goes around to announce the news. Nathalie Carrot-Tanneau was informed in the afternoon that “a very significant risk” of wave-submersion concerned her commune and that the decision to evacuate had been taken.

Among residents, like Huguette, there is no panic but the need to prepare your bag quickly. “I’m taking my husband and my dogs and in 20 minutes we’re leaving. Otherwise, Madam Mayor, she will scream,” smiles the evacuee who has to leave her accommodation in a hurry. Watch our video report.
