Noses raised towards the Eiffel Tower, arms outstretched to take a selfie, the tourists seemed, this Sunday, December 3, little concerned by the news. The day before, however, on the Bir Hakeim bridge, so popular with tourists and other photo ops, a terrorist stabbed and killed a German tourist, before injuring a British tourist and a sixty-year-old with a hammer.

“I think that today no place is safe but Paris has changed a lot (since the 2015 attacks, Editor’s note) and has become safe again,” says Maximiliano Cabrera, 33, a Colombian from Madrid. “We can’t have total security coverage but here, as a tourist, I love it,” he assures, wrapped in his warm winter coat, sunglasses on his nose.

Open collar despite the winter wind blowing at the foot of the Eiffel Tower, Alan Spray is also delighted to visit Paris for the first time, with his wife. “We just thought that things like this shouldn’t stop us from seeing beautiful sights,” said the 64-year-old English caterer, raising his arm towards the monument. However, he and his wife say they are “a little worried” in the aftermath of this deadly attack but still reassured because France “has a good police force which seems to react rather quickly to events”.
