The Attorney General’s Office announced today, Saturday, the liberation of migrants in the municipality of Al-Shuwayrif, southwest of Libya, and the arrest of a number of those involved in their detention.
According to the office in a statement, this came after the investigating authority initiated public prosecution following the dismantling of a network involved in migrant smuggling and human trafficking.
Members of the General Department of Security Operations investigated information related to the activity of gangs that are involved in organizing illegal immigration and human trafficking in the municipality of Al-Shwerif. Initial procedures resulted in confirming the investigations indicating the criminal incidents and led judicial police officers to identify the ring responsible for them.
Following this, the administration officers, with the support of the military units of the Joint Force – South, took on the responsibility of moving to the three locations where the prohibited activity was being managed; they recorded the violations of the rights of 1,300 migrants; and they freed some of them from forced detention and the forms of torture that were inflicted on them in order to force their families to pay sums of money in exchange for their release.
The officers also arrested one of the leaders of the organization and 10 members of it who were illegal immigrants and contributed to the organized criminal activity by committing murder, deprivation of liberty, torture, and rape.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office staff then took over the task of obtaining information, going to the locations, conducting inspections, documenting the victims’ testimonies, and investigating the incidents attributed to the arrested members of the organization.

The police officers arrested one of the leaders of the organization and ten members of it who were illegal migrants who contributed to the organized criminal activity by committing the crimes of murder, deprivation of liberty, torture, and rape. Then, the Public Prosecutor’s Office personnel took over the task of obtaining information, going to the locations, conducting inspections, documenting the victims’ testimonies, and investigating the incidents attributed to the arrested members of the organization.
