The Georgian TV channel Rustavi 2 published footage of the detention of former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. The video shows how he, accompanied by law enforcement officers and handcuffs, gets out of the special transport and enters the building.

Earlier, the Prime Minister of the Republic Irakli Garibashvili announced his arrest. According to preliminary information, Saakashvili is imprisoned in the city of Rustavi (30 km from Tbilisi).

Before that, Saakashvili’s lawyer Beka Basilai said that he could not contact his client. He later confirmed the arrest, calling it “politically motivated.” “This is a political detention,” the lawyer said on the air of the Ukraine 24 TV channel.

Saakashvili was the president of Georgia from 2004 to 2013. After leaving office, several criminal cases were brought against him, including under the article on embezzlement. According to the website of the Georgian prosecutor’s office, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili was sentenced in Georgia to nine years in prison. He was sentenced in absentia to three years in the case of the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and in the case of the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili for six years.
