/ The Turkish Minister of Interior announced, on Monday, the arrest of 12 people following the outbreak of violence yesterday, Sunday, following a Turkish football league match in Trabzon (north of the country).
Ali Yerlikaya said on the X website: “12 people have been identified for their involvement in the events that occurred after the Trabzonspor-Fenerbahce match.”
The video showed the “spark” that ignited the big problem, which was the entry of a Trabzonspor fan during Fenerbahce’s celebrations on the field.
This fan started chanting insults, and got into a “fighting position”, before entering into a violent clash with Fenerbahce’s administrators and players.
After this incident, crowds of fans stormed Trabzonspor Stadium on Sunday evening after the final whistle of the match that their team lost (2-3) while the players of Fenerbahce Club, one of the three major clubs in Istanbul, celebrated the victory.
The fans threatened and assaulted the players, the Istanbul club coach, and its Croatian goalkeeper, Dominik Livakovic, who received a punch in the face during the fight. The minister added that in addition to the fans who stormed the stadium, 5 people who issued calls for violence on social media were also arrested.
The Turkish Football Federation denounced the “unacceptable” events and said on Sunday that “the necessary criminal sanctions will be imposed on those responsible for these events.”
Sunday evening’s events add to the long list of acts of violence that mark the history of Turkish football.
The Turkish league was suspended for a week last December, after the Ankaragucu club president assaulted a referee at the final whistle of a first-class match.
