Recently released footage showcases the weapon, equipped with a crosshair iron sight, stationed at the edge of a field. As two unidentified targets fly overhead, an operator opens fire, yielding what seems to be predictable results. The type of drones targeted remains unclear.
The AK-74, introduced as a successor to the AK-47 in the 1970s, now serves as one of the primary rifles in the Ukrainian military. Alongside the improvised AK-74 weapon, the video captures another individual firing a Degtyaryov DP-27 machine gun, a pre-World War II design that is still in use in Ukraine.
Despite the visually impressive volume of fire emanating from six synchronized AK-74s, the improvised weapon does not appear to successfully intercept any targets. Nevertheless, the video does demonstrate the functionality of the system, unlike previous footage that solely focused on its structure.
Additional footage features the construction process of the multi-AK-74 contraption, emphasizing the impact of Russian kamikaze drones on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These loitering munitions have become a key feature, available in various tiers, since Russia’s invasion began in February last year.
To combat the increasing threat, Ukrainian anti-drone teams have resorted to equipping themselves with powerful lights and laser pointers, aiding in downing Russian drones, particularly Iranian-made Shahed 136 kamikaze types, even during nighttime. This context has seen the use of improvised machine gun mounts on light vehicles and small arms to shoot down enemy drones.
While soldiers near the frontlines often engage in challenging rifle fire attempts against smaller drones, this new multi-rifle device aims to increase the chances of hitting the targets. However, its effectiveness remains uncertain, as computer-aided rifle sights, proven effective in certain circumstances, have yet to be deployed in Ukraine.
Although the operational impact of the improvised multi-AK-74 weapon against Russian drones is questionable, it undeniably showcases an intriguing mechanical advancement. Ukrainian forces continue their pursuit of unconventional solutions to counter the persistent drone threat, showcasing their determination and ingenuity on the battlefield.
