Torrential floods swept through the Mansoura area in the municipality of Idri al-Shati, following heavy rains that the region witnessed.

Reports from the Shati area in the city of Sabha stated that “the floods resulting from the heavy rains that fell on Idri and Mansoura caused floods that submerged citizens’ homes in the eastern Mansoura district in Wadi Shati.” The Ambulance and Emergency Department also confirmed that “there were no human casualties.”

The residents appealed to “the owners of desert vehicles to head urgently to the area to help evacuate the families trapped in their homes that were flooded with water. The residents also made an urgent appeal to the competent authorities to intervene quickly and provide the necessary assistance to those affected.”

In a related context, the Al Bayda Security Directorate called on “residents of neighborhoods that were flooded due to floods last year to evacuate their homes immediately in anticipation of the expected weather conditions according to meteorological sources and in anticipation of heavy rains and weather fluctuations in all areas of the Green Mountain.”

In a statement, the directorate warned “citizens residing in the Green Mountain areas, especially the areas within the jurisdiction of the Al Bayda Security Directorate, to stay away from dangerous places and valleys as a precautionary measure in anticipation of any emergency to avoid any human or material losses.”

The Al Bayda Security Directorate called on “sheep and livestock breeders to take precautions and keep their sheep and livestock away from dangerous areas to protect lives and property.”

These floods coincide with the first anniversary of Hurricane Daniel, which was described as the strongest Mediterranean storm. On September 11, 2023, Libya witnessed the Mediterranean Hurricane Daniel, which caused devastating floods, killing and injuring thousands in addition to a large number of missing persons, and caused great destruction to homes, property, and facilities, as well as collapses in homes, bridges, electricity networks, roads, and schools in coastal cities in the east of the country, especially Benghazi, Al-Bayda, Sousse, Al-Marj, Shahat, and Derna, which are the most affected cities.

Yesterday, flags were flown at half-mast in Tripoli, Misurata and several other cities in mourning for the victims of the floods that swept Derna and areas of eastern Libya as a result of Hurricane Daniel.

On September 2, the head of the government assigned by the House of Representatives, Osama Hamad, issued a decision on the anniversary of Hurricane Daniel, declaring a state of general mourning in all Libyan institutions, both at home and abroad, on September 11. The decision stipulated “granting September 11 a work holiday for all employees in ministries, public bodies, and all government institutions in Libya on the first anniversary of Hurricane Daniel, with the exception of health facilities and security agencies.”
